One of the best ways to get through all the hassles of trying out potential beauty products like those of skin moisturizers and body lotions on the market is to consult reliable literatures that provide the readers not only comprehensive body moisturizer reviews but also the possible effects their ingredients might have on the body. It is of importance to know about potential harmful ingredients that some manufacturers around the globe still continue to use.
The proliferation of skin products on the market that promises beauty and everlasting youth have every skincare industry clamoring for formulations that would make their name known to a worldwide scale. Such is the condition of today's beauty industry that every consumer would find it hard to choose not only the right product for their type of skin but also the safest way to achieve their goals all in the name of beauty and perfection.

Reliable and scientific body moisturizer reviews in the past years have not only made the public open their eyes to the many bogus beauty products that are already out in the market but also made the government act out against these kind of scam. Today chemicals such as parabens are no longer allowed to be included in any beauty formulations.

Parabens are known to increase the shelf-life of many kinds of products from shampoos to lotions and it has been widely used in the past because it is relatively cheap. But studies have shown that these chemicals cause skin irritation and cancer; they imitate that of the structure of estrogen in the body, that when absorb through the skin hormonal changes occur which is usually one of the factors of cancer especially in women.

But it is of great to importance to not that not all body moisturizer reviews can be trustworthy; some are just there to cater to products that have some sort of sponsorship of affiliation on the part of the company or writer. A good way to make use of body moisturizer reviews is of how much a certain product would cost in comparison to another; this could be most beneficial to individuals with tight budgets.

As with the pertinent ingredients on certain skin care products, try looking into separate studies regarding the chemical ingredients use, a good way to carry out this method is to look for recent studies in online journals, that way sources are primary and scientific in nature.

Chemical ingredients to watch out for and that are mostly disregarded in body moisturizer reviews are those of dioxane, which is also known to cause cancer. Alcohol-containing products render the skin dry because of its volatile nature, meaning that it is easily evaporated once it comes into contact with the skin.

Fragrances are most unwise for individuals with sensitive skin types, because these are one of the primary causes of irritation that occur on the skin. Body moisturizer reviews should be regarded with utmost importance and one should be able to recognize if such reviews are only for commercial benefits.

Top Tips From a Chiropractor by Dr. Gregg D. Rubinstein

Posted by C Fab Tuesday, October 20, 2009 0 comments

What height should my chair be at? Should I really sleep with a pillow between my legs? Dr. Gregg D. Rubinstein, a chiropractor at 57th Street Chiropractic in New York City, answers the most common questions that chiropractors are asked.
What type of mattress do you advise people get?

I recommend getting as firm a mattress as you feel comfortable sleeping on. If I say get an ultra-firm mattress and you don't feel comfortable on that and are having trouble sleeping, than that is not doing you any good at all. I do personally sleep on a Tempur-Pedic and I do endorse those to my patients, but I always tell them to try it before you buy it because if you are not comfortable than it won't be of any help.

Do you recommend sleeping with a pillow between your legs?

I think that is very good if you are a side sleeper. It allows your hips to assume a more neutral posture, which I think is an excellent way to sleep.

Do you have a recommend sleeping position?

Sleeping on your back is best. Sleeping in a fetal position on your side is 2nd best. Sleeping on your stomach is no good because you need to turn your head almost 90 degrees.

Are there daytime tips for work you can share?

Ergonomics are important. You want to make sure when you are sitting that your feet are on the floor and that your work station is set up appropriately for you and your height. You should make sure that your keyboard is ergonomically set up and within reach and your chair height is proper with respect to your desk.

What is correct chair height?

It's a system of ratios. Your arms should basically be at a 90-degree angle, resting on your chair. Your feet should be resting on the floor. If you are of shorter stature, perhaps a footrest under your desk might be better so you can rest your feet on that.

Are there some common activities that should be avoided?

It is different for each person. For some people, running can really stress their spine, and for some people, doing squats at the gym can really cause disc problems. It is different for everybody and that's why everyone should get an assessment so they can find where their strengths and weaknesses are. Having good posture is important. If you have a kid and your kid is carrying a backpack to school, than that backpack should not exceed one-third of your child's body weight. If you have a 50-pound kid and you put 20 pounds of books in that backpack, than that is going to trash his spine. There are so many little things. Avoid stress. Keep good posture. Sleep with proper posture. All of these are important pieces in the puzzle.

The History of Chiropractic by Dr. Gregg D. Rubinstein

Posted by C Fab Saturday, October 17, 2009 0 comments

Dr. Gregg D. Rubinstein, a chiropractor at 57th Street Chiropractic in New York City, gives us the history of chiropractic.
It was started in 1895 by D.D. Palmer, who at the time was a magnetic healer. There was a janitor in the building in which he had an office. One day, Dr. Palmer was working pretty late and the janitor was there cleaning up. This custodian was mostly deaf, but Dr. Palmer was able to communicate with him. So the doctor asked the custodian, "What happened to your hearing?" The custodian told him that one day he had lifted something heavy, he suddenly felt a pop in his back and he immediately lost the majority of his hearing. So Dr. Palmer asked if the custodian minded if he examined him. He laid him down and looked at the custodian's upper back and found a lump over by his spine and said, "I just want to try something here..." He leaned in and pressed on the lump and he heard a pop, and the janitor could suddenly hear again. So that piqued Dr Palmer's interest. Then he started to study spinal manipulation and he developed the practice of chiropractic.

The art of spinal manipulation is something that has been going on for thousands of years. There were hieroglyphics found in Egypt that demonstrated spinal manipulation that were over 2,000 years old. Spinal manipulation is nothing new. There were people in England who used to do it called bone setters. The Chinese have also been doing spinal manipulation for thousands of years.

Difference between straights and mixers

A straight chiropractor does spinal manipulation only. Someone who calls himself a mixer might use some physical therapy modality, might incorporate massage, might use ultrasound, electric stimulation, hot packs and those types of things. A straight chiropractor would only manipulate the spine.

What Dr. Rubinstein Does

I do mostly straight chiropractic, but I would be called a mixer by someone who is completely straight because I do use physical modality to alleviate pain. If someone comes in and he is in a lot of pain, you cannot adjust him immediately. Sometimes you have to relax the muscles so you can get in there and do the adjustments if they are too what we call "hot." That means the person is in so much pain that if you try to manipulate that person, it will send him through the roof. Part of being a good chiropractor, rather than an average chiropractor, is not only knowing where or when to adjust, but most importantly knowing when not to adjust.

Infertility Treatment by Arthur Ralph

Posted by C Fab Friday, October 16, 2009 0 comments

Both men and women suffer from infertility caused by various reasons. However, it's important for both the sex to undergo treatment for this complicated issue. Various known and unknown factors cause infertility in women. These include diseases like endometriosis, diminished ovarian reserve, ovulation disorders, and low progesterone level. Low sperm count and low sperm motility, STD, injury or chronic diseases, sperm blockage and ageing are some of the reasons men for, which suffer.

Scheduled drugs and systematic treatment can cure most of the above mentioned infertility problems except ageing and chronic diseases, although these treatments are quite expensive and may have harmful side effects. Additional treatment may be required to cure the side effects.

Treatments conducted through IVF or In Vitro Fertilization and ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is best among the other methods of infertility treatment. In this technique, the egg cells outside the womb are fertilized by the sperm and then transferred inside. This treatment is suggested when other techniques fail to give results. This technique is a hormonally controlled ovulation progression. In this treatment involves, the ova is removed from the female's ovaries and helps the sperm to fertilize in a fluid medium. But this is not a normal process at all and involves excavation of the eggs from the ovary, fertilizing them in an outside laboratory and putting them back in the uterus. In the normal process, the human decides to pick the healthiest sperm for reproducing the egg but in the artificial process, the embryologist takes this decision. However, when he fails to pick the healthiest sperm and egg, it may cause the ill health of the child during birth and even later in life.

Some alternative techniques with a holistic approach are fast becoming popular in order to cure the problem of secondary infertility. These techniques are all the more preferred by people as these have less or no side effects at all.

The acupuncture method, for example, especially ear acupuncture or Auricular is very effective in cases where female infertility has been caused by some kind of malfunction of the ovary. The hormonal message that is transferred from brain to ovary is the most beneficial result received from this technique. In accordance to the investigative trials, those women who have received acupuncture treatment for about 30 times within a time period of 3 months have shown good results. Those female who underwent hormonal therapy along with it suffered from side effects.

In the alternative treatment techniques, diet and lifestyle changes are given a lot of importance. Regular intake of such things that contain caffeine like coffee, chocolate, cocoa, green tea (containing caffeine), black tea and colored soft drinks which has harmful effects on conception is discouraged. According to a study, one and a half cup of coffee for a woman who is trying for pregnancy is sure to delay her conception. Thus coffee is a strictly a no-no for patients suffering from infertility.

Diets that include fish contaminated with PCB or Polychlorinated Biphenyls are also believed to be a cause for substantial reduction in the ability to become pregnant. According to one study, women who had more than one meal containing fish contaminated with PCBs (procured from Lake Ontario), developed reduced fecundity within a month.

The best result for the treatment of infertility has been reported through the Chinese medicines, acupuncture and of course, the holistic approach. The holistic approach reaches to the depth of the problem and only then delivers physical, spiritual as well as emotional treatment, rather than only investigating the organs. On the other side, the conventional approach to the problem of infertility fails to successfully detect and remove the real causes and moreover, causes side effects. The holistic approach suggests a natural remedy and a way of life that can really solve the problem as soon as the real cause is determined.

Acne Cures - What You Need To Know by Brian Hackett

Posted by C Fab Thursday, October 15, 2009 0 comments

If you have not had your bath for a couple of days, you are in good position to grow spots of acne all over your features. This notwithstanding, suffering from the condition is not an indication of uncleanness on your part. For some people, it could actually be hereditary, while for others it could be an allergic response to certain unfavorable conditions around them.

Antibiotics are a good option for the treatment of severe acne. The drug known as benzoyl peroxide is one very good option that a professional will likely recommend in a hurry. However, you might want to consider any number of vitamin A derivatives. If they don't seem to be working, then you might want to take a close look at your skin; you may have one of those skin types that don't treat easily.

Acne Vulgaris is without doubt the most common type of the skin condition that people suffer from, but even in-house, there are differences that offer the spice of variation. Cystic acne on your face is one clear example, while some people get the subsiding tropical acne of their trunk. However, the worst type is the one that grows beyond just your face to become extensive acne on your chest and shoulders. I tell you, this is never a very flattering sight.

Everywhere you turn in the United States today, you are bound to find more than a few people who suffer from acne vulgaris. This is the clinical name of the condition; most folks simply refer to it on the streets as acne, or freckles, or other such terms I'm sure you have heard from time to time. People who suffer the most from acne are little ones who are just coming of mature age, but occasionally it does spread to a few outliers. In certain instances, an arbitrary doctor might suggest that if you watched what you ate and drank you might be able to control the rate or extent to which you suffered from acne. Whereas that is true, it is not always so. In the case of an outbreak of the condition all over your face, neck and arms, it cannot be prevented by a controlled diet. As a matter of fact, the best thing you can do for yourself at this time would be to see a genuine professional.

8 Best Exercises To Lose Weight Quickly by Sumaryan

Posted by C Fab Wednesday, October 14, 2009 0 comments

The best exercises to lose weight quickly are not secrets reserved for a mere few. They are quite common, yet they are overlooked by many. People seeking to lose weight might think there's some magic program or exercise that will get it done.

Would it surprise you to know that you probably already participate in some of these exercises? The real secret is in knowing how to do those exercises for maximum benefit.

If you walk or climb stairs, for instance, you are utilizing the best exercises to lose weight quickly. You just need to make the most of them by upping the frequency and time you commit to these heart-thumping activities.

Unless you spend a vigorous 45 to 60 minutes every day on these exercises, you won't lose weight quickly. You'll just get tired. The key is consistency and that you work your system regularly. Muscle-building exercises are most effective to lose weight quickly.

Whichever exercise you choose, make sure you put all your energy into it. You want to keep your heart rate up and your blood pumping throughout the exercise period, with a proper cool down afterwards.

If you're brisk walking, for example, walk slowly for the final few minutes to give your body a chance to cool down. Stopping suddenly can cause muscle cramps and really isn't good for your heart. Give it time to fall back to normal while you're moderately active.

Make sure you drink lots of water while exercising to replenish your reserves and to help prevent cramping.

When you're ready, here are the 10 best exercises to lose weight quickly. Start gradually and let your body adjust to the workouts.

1. Squats: This exercise is great for building leg and buttock muscles. Stand with your feet at shoulder width apart and squat down and then up 10-20 times through two or three sets.

2. Jumping Jacks: You probably remember these from your school days. They provide one of the best whole body aerobic workouts. Do four or five set of 20 jumping jacks for best results.

3. Stepping: If you've made numerous trips upstairs while moving or cleaning, you'll know how much energy this exercise takes. The benefits are multi-fold: burns calories, boosts heart rate, great aerobics workout, builds leg and buttock muscles. You can use your stairs for this. Step up and down 20 times, rest and repeat two or three times.

4. Walking: Fast walking is better than slow walking, but both are beneficial. If you want an exercise to lose weight quickly, walk briskly for half an hour and you can burn up to 180 calories.

5. Bicycling: The outdoors can be more enjoyable, but stationary indoor cycles can provide an equally good exercise to lose weight quickly. In fact, if you apply the right amount of resistance at the right speed, you can lose between 250 and 500 calories in half an hour.

6. Swimming: This is a great, fun exercise for many people. It provides an excellent cardio workout that uses your entire body. Doing the breast stroke for half an hour can burn 400 calories.

7. Cross Country Skiing: Another fun activity with the same benefits as swimming.

8. Jump Rope: This isn't just a kids' game. Adults can get a terrific, unparalleled total body workout by jumping rope for as little as 15 to 20 minutes.

That gives you eight of the top workouts you can try. They are just some of the best exercises to lose weight quickly.

Healthy Recipes For Your Kids by Marilyn Reid

Posted by C Fab Monday, October 12, 2009 0 comments

Don't have enough time in your hands to do some real cooking in your kitchen? If you're a parent with little kids, this can be a problem. Children are not easy to feed. They usually pass a stage when all they want are junk foods, fried chicken, hotdog-processed foods you'll find in supermarkets and fast food chains. The problem is, much as they enjoy these foods, they're dangerous to your children's health. The challenge to all parents like you is to prepare delicious and nutritious food for your kids. And in most instances, squeezing cooking time in your daily schedule isn't at all easy. What you'll need are the right healthy recipes that are both delicious and easy to prepare.

Yes, there are recipes that combine all three characteristics-quick preparation, good nutrient content, and great taste-and your kids will surely love the food.

Kid-Friendly Snacks

Although you may think that snacks are of little value compared to the main meals-breakfast, dinner, lunch-what your kids snack on are actually crucial to their health. Snacks are usually taken anytime of the day: when kids are watching television, after playing, or whenever they feel like eating. Without close monitoring, your kids can easily grab junk foods and unhealthy meals during these times. The key to controlling this is to prepare delicious treats for your kids with the help of healthy recipes.

Believe it or not, there are some nutritious treats that you can prepare with no effort at all. Just take a look at the following:

* Smoothies. Instead of the usual ice cream or artificial drinks from the supermarket, why don't you make these delicious treats out of fresh fruits? With the use of a blender, all you need is to toss in some fruits, milk, juice, or yogurt, and then press the blend button. In no time at all, your kids will enjoy a delicious and nutritious shake.

* Jelly. All that you will need to prepare this snack are gelatin and fruit juice, plus other extras you might want to add like yogurt, fruits, etc. The preparation only involves simple cooking of the gelatin, some mixing and pouring, and then the refrigerating of the finished jelly for that wonderful taste. This is a typical favorite among kids.

* Home-made popsicle. Well, this is a no-brainer snack, and even your kids can prepare it. All you'll need is a fruit juice or fruit shake that you pour into a mold. Next thing you must do is put the stick on the mold and then place it in your freezer. Once it's frozen, your kid will have an instant healthy popsicle!

* Nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. Instead of the usual chips, these are healthy alternatives. Plus, they need no preparation at all. Just be sure that you don't add salt on the nuts and seeds.

With all these ideas, you'll have no problem keeping your kids healthy while they enjoy the food they eat. And for a lot more kid-friendly and healthy recipes for your diet, you can find more information in cookbooks and online sites. They'll help your kids and your family stay healthy.

Are you sick of the diet industry and wondering how to lose weight naturally? Most of today's diet products are at worst a scam and at best a temporary fix for a long-term problem. A pill that suppresses appetite does nothing to change the habits that are causing the unhealthy eating in the first place.
Approaching the problem using natural methods will give you results that can last a lifetime. Generally, it is as simple as adding some healthier foods into your diet while slowly taking out the junk.

The first thing to understand is that weight loss is not going to happen overnight. After all, you didn't gain the excess weight in one day of binge eating, so you can't drop it by starving yourself for a week and going for a jog. It takes long-lasting, gradual changes in lifestyle to achieve permanent weight loss. Once you commit to having the patience to stick with a fitness and nutrition program, it is time to learn how to lose weight naturally.

The most important change to make in your lifestyle is to eat healthier food. Look for food that is high in nutrients and low in processed sugars and fats. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat meats, some dairy products, and certain nuts make excellent choices that can be incorporated into even the pickiest eater's diet. Work these foods in gradually instead of trying to remove all "bad" foods and force yourself to eat all these strange foods you've never liked in the past. Remember, you are trying to make lasting changes that will become a pleasant part of your daily life, not a chore that you have to endure in order to achieve your weight loss goal. Any food is acceptable as long as it is kept in moderation, including such taboo items as chocolate, cakes, and pizza.

When planning out how to lose weight naturally, consider the type of physical activity you enjoy. Most people associate fitness with boring tasks like running on the treadmill at a gym, but there are all sorts of outdoor activities and sports that you can choose to get your daily activity. These days, there are adult leagues for almost any sport, including fast-pitch baseball and flag football. Even walking around the block every night will help you drop the pounds and give you more energy during the day at work.

If you have children, you probably do not even have to plan a fitness activity. Simply take them to a park or school playground with some sporting equipment and you will get a great workout while spending quality time with your kids. Basketball, playing catch with a baseball or softball, soccer, handball, bicycling, and tennis are just a few playtime activities that you and your child can both enjoy. Making physical activity a daily part of their life will also teach your children how to lose weight naturally so they do not fall prey to diet scams when they are older.

Have you ever wondered if the negatives of caffeine found in green tea outweigh its benefits?
1] According to the USDA loose leaf green tea has about 32 mg/100ml of caffeine. That is roughly 1/2 the amount you would get from coffee.

What is wrong with caffeine?

It stimulates the central nervous system, the heart, and the respiratory system to the extent that high levels of it are now banned for many competitive athletes. Negative effects include irritability, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, diarrhea, headache, or loss of appetite.

2] However, small amounts of coffee can actually be beneficial because of the antioxidants in it. According to the Iowa Women's Health Study coffee drinkers risk of death by cardiovascular disease was 24% less than non coffee drinkers.

In fact, coffee is the main source of dietary antioxidants for most Americans.

Why not drink just coffee?

3] Coffee's benefits are real but not nearly as extensive as those of green tea. Besides the caffeine, green tea has a powerful antioxidant mix of its own from the catechin family of flavonoids. These catechins make the platelets in your blood less prone to clotting which in turn make you less likely to have a stroke or develop heart problems.

The evidence is also mounting up that the catechins may help prevent breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer and others.

An English study in 2000 found that women who drank at least one cup of tea per day had higher bone mineral density than those that didn't. A Chinese study two years later reported similar results.

4] In addition, it has been touted as causing weight loss but studies show you would have to drink an excessively large number of cups daily to have even a small effect. Do you remember the negative side effects of too much caffeine mentioned above?

Drinking too many servings also adds to the caffeine you get in not only coffee but various foods such as breakfast cereals, baked products, fast foods, other beverages and dairy products. That is a potent cocktail of possible side effects.

What's the Solution?

5] Green tea in moderation is the best way to get its benefits without the various adverse elements. There are different ways to decrease the caffeine such as using the same bag or leaves multiple times but the catechin levels drop also. A better way to get a healthy dose of catechins is with a balanced multivitamin supplement that has green tea extract in combination with other nutrients that add to its benefits

If you are like me, you probably have seen so many advertisements for green tea that it makes your head spin. The difficulty for all of us is to discover what it actually does as opposed to the claims made for it.
I have seen websites that make claims of green tea benefits in 25 to 40 different health categories. One person even touted how much weight she had lost in one month by drinking green tea in addition to taking it in rather expensive extract pills. Later in the article we find that she was drinking her tea instead of soda pop.

As far as the weight loss goes, drinking plain water would have achieved similar results.

So, why have they been drinking tea in Asia for thousands of years?

A recent Japanese study of 40,000 people in Japan showed that green tea drinkers had a lower death rate from all causes including cardiovascular diseases [the world's number one killer]. In fact, even after a heart attack they had a 28% lower death rate than non tea drinkers.

A similar study a few years earlier found that people who drank green tea at least once a week consistently for 6 to 10 years had significantly higher bone density.

Which tea is best?

There are three main varieties of tea -- green, black, and oolong. Black and oolong have a stronger more robust flavor but the real difference is in the antioxidants.

Green tea contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. There are basically four of them in green tea which are collectively called catechins of which the most powerful is one called epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG.

Black and oolong tea also contain EGCG but during the fermentation process much of it is lost through oxidation. Green teas are made from steamed unfermented leaves.

What do antioxidants do?

Antioxidants are enzymes that capture and neutralize free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable oxygen atoms naturally created by the body but are also imbibed from environmental toxins such as the sun's ultraviolet rays, pesticides, air pollution or the natural chemicals found in our food. They can be thought of as the body's version of car exhaust fumes.

If the free radical count gets high enough you will suffer cell damage that could lead to cancer and as many scientists believe, premature aging. On average each cell in our bodies is attacked by a free radical every 10 seconds. In the time it takes you to read this article all your cells will have been attacked 35-40 times.

It should be emphasized that there are other important antioxidants that are not present in green tea in notable amounts. Some of these are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta carotene, along with amino acids and nutrients like Lutein, L-Glutathione, Bilberry, L-Camosine and grape extract. To make sure you get all the antioxidants you need, consider a balanced multivitamin supplement that contains green tea extract in combination with other nutrients.

A good way of getting the best results when you are in the gym is to do the different techniques in molding the muscles you desire. It is not important if you are a novice in weight exercise or an experienced gym buff. What is important is to achieve that muscular body with the help of these body building techniques, in building muscles.
An important technique that one can use is the utilization of the negatives. For every exercise, a repetition is divided into two; the positive part and the negative part. The positive part is actually the lifting part while the negative is the repetition's lowering part. Though the positive is the lifting part, it is actually the negative part that builds the muscles. It stretches the muscles thus making it stronger.

Your success depends on how many negative part you've completed in one set. You need at least 5 seconds allotted for every negative part in a set. However, you'll find it difficult to do as many repetitions as you can, so you might want to lessen the weights. By doing this, you'll notice that there is a dramatic increase in the results.

Pre-exhaustion is another strategy you can use in bodybuilding. In pre-exhaustion, you will first focus on a muscle exclusively. After fatiguing the specific muscle, you can now start a compound exercise which includes that specific muscle. One example of this is a 2-3 sets of extensions before doing a set of squats.

Still another technique is called the superset. It is a combination of two workout fused into one set. It is done by doing an exercise after one exercise with no rest in between. Supersets are usually done by utilizing alternating muscles. An example of a superset is a triceps press set after a barbell curl set. In addition, you can also do a superset that involves muscles in the same group. Barbell curls then followed by a preacher curls with no rest is a good example.

Super-7's, also called twenty-ones, is also popular for bodybuilders. It is actually a 21 repetitions divided into three sets. In every set, there should be seven repetitions for both upper and lower phase and another seven for the complete repetitions. This will give you 21 repetitions all in all. One good example of this technique is the bicep curls exercise. You can do the first seven by lifting the weights until you reach the middle of the curl. Second seven is done from the top to the midway and the last seven repetitions are done from the lower portion up until you reach the top. Super-7's is very exhausting because you utilize all the muscles in that area.

The techniques mentioned above are just some of the many techniques you can perform in building your muscles. It is important that you explore on these techniques so that you have an idea how a technique affect your body in building those muscles. By choosing the right technique that fits you, it is guaranteed that you'll have a good time inside the gym.

The main benefit of consuming acai is its powerful antioxidant activity. To better understand how a powerful antioxidant can help preserve health and prevent disease, consider how much harm and suffering is caused by oxidation. In chemistry, free radicals are atoms that have unpaired electrons, which makes them highly reactive. In biological systems like the human body, this reactivity usually translates into damaging effects on the body's cellular structures (for example, cell membranes and DNA). This oxidative damage caused by free radicals in the body has been associated with a staggering number of diseases and disease-promoting processes, notably cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
Aging in mammals is the result of normal developmental and metabolic processes. Free-radical damage is also one of the major factors affecting how cells age, making it a major determining factor of how fast and how well (or how poorly) our bodies age. A significant amount of research data clearly demonstrates the causative role of free radicals in the aging process. Research also shows that specific antioxidants help the body resist spontaneous oxidation and combat oxidative damage to DNA, which in turn lengthens the life span of mammals. The incidence of age-related diseases and how long good health can be maintained is thus highly dependent on our total production and intake of antioxidants.
Centenarians typically represent the best example of successful aging. A 1998 study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that centenarians had lower blood levels of lipid peroxides (oxidation products) and higher blood levels of antioxidants than did people aged seventy to ninety-nine. Thus centenarians' lower degree of oxidative stress and higher antioxidant defense functioning were directly correlated to their longevity.
On the other hand, major causes of disability in elderly people- including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Alzheimer's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis-are caused or accelerated on some level by free radicals and oxidation. Several diseases commonly seen among the elderly are associated with oxidative damage:
Oxidation of LDL cholesterol is considered a primary disease-causing mechanism in the development of atherosclerosis.
Oxidative damage to cells can trigger mutations and malignant growth leading to cancer.
A considerable body of evidence suggests that oxidative stress causes inflammation and tissue damage, for example, in the respiratory system. The lung damage, and later immune damage, experienced by individuals with lowered cellular antioxidant capacity is thought to be a risk factor for asthma.
Free-radical damage to lens proteins damages the eyes and contributes to the development of cataracts. If cataract development in the general population were delayed by ten years through the use of antioxidants, it is estimated that the number of cataract surgeries in the United States would be reduced by half.
Increased lipid peroxidation (a marker of oxidative stress) has been found in the blood of rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Diabetes is known to involve oxidative stress in several different ways. Among patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus there is a significant inverse correlation between levels of glycated hemoglobin (a major risk factor for diabetes) and total free-radical scavenging activity; oxidative damage may also promote non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Oxidative damage is also known to contribute to several of the major complications of diabetes, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and atherosclerosis.
Antioxidant levels are significantly depressed in fibromyalgia patients.
There is solid evidence that Alzheimer's dementia is associated with oxidative stress.
High levels of the byproducts of oxidation products have been found to be elevated in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of people with multiple sclerosis.
Oxidative stress is a pivotal problem in chronic pancreatitis. Antioxidant therapy has been shown to be a safe and effective medical alternative to surgery for painful chronic pancreatitis.
Oxidative stress appears to play a role in the tissue damage of active ulcerative colitis, and it has been suggested that a defect in antioxidant defenses is a causative factor in the disease.
Abnormalities of antioxidant function and depletion of the body's antioxidant reserves have been shown to contribute to the development of Parkinson's disease.
Many drugs cause or accelerate the formation of toxic free radicals, which are thought to be responsible for a large number of adverse drug reactions, as well as adverse interactions between drugs.
Skin inflammations, including atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and sunburn, are all associated with antioxidant depletion in the skin. Supplementation with antioxidants has improved all of these conditions.

World leading research for health and wellness.

You have a full time job like most people you know. You work hard with lots of effort and determination. You go through everyday with hard work and sacrifice. So how do you stay fit? Do you even have the time to do so now that you're so caught up with office work? Well, here's some good news for you. You can stay fit while doing all that work that you do in the office. Nowadays, many companies are becoming more fitness friendly and have special exercise rooms in the same building.
Some companies offer incentives for their employees to get them to exercise as they recognize the important of having physically fit employees who exercise regularly. There are even others that have fitness programs in their company. These programs can be really rewarding if put to use. But of course the best reward would be your own physical fitness. However, if your company offers none of these, don't worry. There are still many ways you can get fit and stay on top of the game at work.

How about organizing an office fitness group? That way you can meet maybe once or twice a week and exercise together, which is always more fun than working out on your own. There are sure to be other staff members in your office who are interested in getting fit and staying healthy like you. They too would be interested in finding ways to fit exercise into their daily schedule at work. Of course first you need permission to do so, so get permission from your supervisor or head of department to put up a notice of some sort to announce your fitness group and to provide details of your first meeting. Try meeting regularly and focus on encouraging one another instead of competing against each other. One you have formed your group and set down some rules, you're good to go.

Most office fitness groups meet for the fun of it, but you can always take it a step further if you are all interested to do so. Maybe you can enter a fundraising race; it is for a good cause. There have been many teams which have done this and have managed to raise a sizeable amount of money due to the team's position within their office. Isn't this a wonderful way to give back to society?

Ok, so organizing is not everyone's cup of tea. How about just trying to squeeze in some exercises during your work day at the office? For example, if you keep weights at your desk or in your office, you can easily take a ten-minute break and do some weight lifting. Another easy way is to walk. Yes, walk around your office whenever the situation calls for you to move. How about taking the stairs when going up or down floors? Instant workout! Squeezing as many steps as possible means increasing your overall activity level and at the same time boosting your fitness level.

Invest in a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day. You can also use it at home to monitor your progress. When at the office, look for a quiet spot where you can do stretches and other muscle-building exercises (lunges and squats). When stretching, make sure you have some private area. If you cannot find a separate place try the bathroom. Stretching can actually be done almost anywhere, as long as you're not too obvious with it.

Or try checking the outside area of your office building to see if the area is safe and suitable for outdoor exercise. If it is, you can utilize that area during your lunch breaks. You can go for a short walk or do some stretches. When you're out of the office, you're giving your body a chance to take a break, away from tedium of work. You get to refresh your mind and your body, so make full use of the outdoors. It's good for you.

Did you know that there are some corporations that offer rewards to their employees who are into fitness and who work out regularly? Check with your Human Resources coordinator and see if your company is one of them. You could also check to see if your company offers any kind of incentive or gym membership for the employees. There are times when some employers provide incentives like covering a portion of the cost for the annual gym membership, as they recognize that an employee that is fit and healthy is a good investment for the company. The HR coordinator is able to provide you with lots of information with regards to your company's policies on health and fitness. It would be a good idea for you to take the time to have a chat with him or her and find out what benefits you are entitled to. Even if your company does not offer any such incentive, you can still find lots of other ways where you can stay fit at your job without having to sacrifice your time or dignity.
